With its tea gardens, toy train, vibrant marketplaces, and stunning vistas of Kanchenjunga, Darjeeling is the most popular hill station in West Bengal. And it is an undisputed holiday destination in this region. So, when I decided to go to Kurseong instead, everyone’s reaction was almost the same. Why not Darjeeling?
The question was fair. Somewhere, I even wondered if I was making the right decision. But after spending a weekend in Kurseong, I received my answer. Here is the reason below.
I wanted a break, not another busy destination
Don’t get me wrong, Darjeeling is stunning, though. But it’s also one of the busiest hill stations in eastern India. On weekends and holidays, Mall Road, cafés, and vistas could get really packed with tourists. That thing is likewise charming, but I did not want any congested streets or a full itinerary this time.
As a matter of fact, I wanted to enjoy peaceful walks, leisurely mornings, and lots of time to explore in the mountains on my own. And Kurseong gave me that. From the time I arrived, it felt much slower; the weekend was more like a real vacation than just another hectic journey.
The journey to Kurseong was part of the experience
Your journey starts before you arrive, and that is one advantage of travelling to Kurseong. It all begins with driving through the hills, which are interspersed with woods, tea gardens, winding roads, and sporadic views of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Here’s a fascinating fact. Kurseong is home to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage property. Constructed in 1881, this narrow-gauge railway rises from the plains into the Himalayas through ingenious loops and zigzags, making it one of the world’s most spectacular mountain railways.
Tea gardens everywhere
Yes. I anticipated tea gardens. However, what was different was that rather than being only tourist destinations, the tea estates are an essential part of Kurseong’s daily existence. You can see undulating green slopes at almost every turn, and you can breathe in the refreshing mountain air that smells so fresh after a rainstorm.
I became aware of the amount of labour involved in producing each cup of Darjeeling tea as I observed tea workers navigate the farms. It’s a beautiful setting with deep ties to the local past.
The views were just as rewarding
My assumption that Darjeeling had the best mountain views in West Bengal quickly changed when I reached Kurseong.
There are several sites with stunning views of the nearby Himalayan peaks. You can see endless tea plantations and lush valleys on a clear day. Early mornings frequently show you mist sweeping through the hills, while evenings cast a soft golden light across the highlands.
The food was a pleasant surprise in Kurseong
One of my favourite parts of the trip was the cuisine, which is something I didn’t expect. Food was flavourful and served with views.
Small cafes and neighbourhood restaurants served steaming momos, thukpa, freshly baked pastries, and delectable Darjeeling tea. A simple breakfast felt spectacular in hotels in Kurseong because these dining spots had views of the hills.
Additionally, securing a table was easier than in other crowded locations. I could actually take a seat without much effort, unwind, and enjoy the scenery and the meal.
Final thoughts
Finding a “better” site was not the only reason Kurseong was selected over Darjeeling. Finding a location that fit my travel requirements at the time was the goal.
Kurseong offered peaceful tea gardens, gorgeous mountain vistas, historic charm, leisurely days, and just enough attractions to keep the weekend exciting without feeling hurried. Sometimes the most memorable travel experiences are the ones that nobody tells you about, that aren’t well-known or praised. One calm morning, one cup of tea, and one mist-covered slope at a time, these are the ones that subtly surprise you.
